Jennifer Lawrence is the first victim of Zach Cregger's The Flood

Riding high off the success of Resident Evil, Zach Cregger booked an Oscar winner for his next film. Per Variety, Jennifer Lawrence will be getting in the water for The Flood, the mysterious sci-fi film Cregger’s been trying to get off the ground (or sea floor) since Weapons became a hit. Little is known about The Flood, aside from tidbits about its development. Cregger wrote the film under his deal with Amblin, and Netflix wanted the new movie from “the guy who brought you Weapons” for its streaming service. However, Cregger reportedly made the movie’s theatrical release a non-negotiable, and talks between the filmmaker and Netflix stalled. (This was the height of Netflix executives bad-mouthing movie theaters, and the streamer apparently didn’t see Cregger as a star director deserving of the in-theater treatment.) Cut to several months later, and Warner Bros. announced Cregger had come home. WB and New Line would release The Flood, which will now star Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence.

Cregger has other projects on the horizon, including one at Netflix, where he’s producing an adaptation of Brian Michael Bendis and Marc Andreyko’s comic book, Torso. Additionally, he has Gladys, a high-profile Weapons prequel, on the way. He won’t direct Gladys, but he is expected to write it with Godzilla: King Of The Monsters scribe Zach Shields. Of course, Weapons‘ Oscar-winning Amy Madigan will return as the creepy, twig-snapping witch. WB slated Gladys for a September 2028 release, about a month after The Flood opens.

Thus far, Cregger’s work has benefited greatly from low-information marketing, and The Flood follows that tradition. However, Cregger did offer a juicy little quote about the film to Men’s Health. “I’m not comparing [The Flood] to 2001, because I think 2001 is a true masterpiece in every sense of the word. But there’s a bizarreness to that movie that’s really undeniable, and it’s also a horror movie,” he says. “I think 2001 is a really thrilling horror movie about human nature, and obviously about artificial intelligence, but it asks big questions. And I think, in that way, there’s some similarity with Flood.” Little is known about the film aside from its name, star, similarity to 2001, and release date. Oh, that reminds us: The Flood opens in theaters on August 11, 2028.
