2 Live Crew's Luther Campbell running for Miami mayor

Luther Campbell—erstwhile frontman of 2 Live Crew, party promoter, adult film producer, would-be reality show star—is a man who knows how to make a persuasive argument, whether he’s standing up for free speech, bribing the Miami Hurricanes, or simply encouraging everyone to put their face down and asses up. Now Campbell is seeking to put those rhetorical skills to work for the good people of Miami-Dade County as their mayor, announcing his campaign via his regular column for The Miami New Times. According to Campbell, he’s “mad frustrated” with the current administration headed by Carlos Alvarez—who’s up for a recall vote on March 15—and Campbell believes he’s the man to replace him, based on his dealings with local politics as the owner of his own nightclub, and the years spent running his own record labels, which he believes prepared him for handling the county budget. Because when it comes down to it, addressing local issues with solid waste services isn’t entirely different from marketing the Buckwheat Boyz.

Another facet of Campbell’s platform gleaned from personal experience: Taxing strippers, whom Campbell say “make all this money and don’t pay taxes”—a potential untapped source of revenue that Campbell believes could help pay for youth athletics programs for young girls. Of course, Campbell knows that’s likely going to be unpopular (“My stripper friends are gonna be mad at me”), but he’s also full of good intentions, like creating gated communities to reduce crime and fixing the public hospital. And as for whether Campbell can get elected in a city with such a high concentration of Cuban-Americans, he’s pretty confident he can pull it off, because he’s the guy who gave them Pitbull. Not yet addressed: whether Campbell would support more competitive wages for Fuck Shop workers. Although that's probably more of a federal issue. [via Pitchfork]
