Best Animated Film. I'm probably going to get some flack from my animation-loving colleagues, but I could do without this category. There's obviously no commitment to honoring truly daring animated films— this year, A SCANNER DARKLY was to my mind a pretty clear winner in that regard— and the nominees and winners basically correspond to their box-office success. Also, the device of putting animated characters into the real-life Oscar audience is getting old.
