’90s dance movie Can’t Touch This soon to be a thing
Hollywood, like plate tectonics, is essentially a business of recycling, taking the old and making it into hot new material again. But lately the studios are finding the crust has barely cooled before it is time to get subducted once again. The newest creator to gleefully step up to the task is none other than Step Up 2: The Streets and Step Up 3D director Jon M. Chu. Having finished playing in the sandbox with G.I. Joe: Retaliation and trying to impress your older sister with his forthcoming Jem and The Holograms, Chu is now seeking to marry his three loves of dance movies, genre pastiche, and making people mad with the just-announced ’90s dance movie Can’t Touch This.
The movie will be written by Annie Mebane and Steve Basilone, who honed their magma-making skills as producers on The Goldbergs. The plot has not yet been announced, but will likely show just how different it was to dance in the ’90s as compared to, say, 2006. But with any luck, Can’t Touch This will position itself as the Prometheus of the Step Up series and feature the adventures of 10-year-old dancing machine Channing Tatum.
