A Late Night writer visits a New Jersey sex expo as a masturbation superfan
In his real life, Conner O’Malley is a writer for Late Night With Seth Meyers and the boyfriend of Saturday Night Live’s Aidy Bryant. But in the realm of YouTube sketch comedy, he is “Tony Camarabi, New York City’s #1 Masturbator,” a devoted enthusiast of onanism, resplendent in an Amsterdam ball cap, “Future Rich Guy” T-shirt, and Mets sweatpants. As the Camarabi character, an amiable, easily impressed meathead and a vocal advocate of self-love, O’Malley recently visited the Exxxotica Expo in Edison, New Jersey to talk to the vendors and attendees. The Expo bills itself as “the largest event in the USA dedicated to love and sex.” What it amounts to, in reality, is a rather depressing-looking convention center filed with tables and booths set up to sell sex toys, plus the occasional, bored-looking pole dancers. Erotic it is not.
In his video of the event, O’Malley strides around the convention center like New Jersey’s answer to Borat, asking people very blunt questions about masturbation. “You like jerking off?” he asks one fellow in a Red Bull hoodie. “Sometimes,” comes the response. “It depends on the day.” Most of the people O’Malley talks to are dumpy-looking men, but he does make time to chat with a forlorn cage dancer, as well as a woman selling a masturbation device capable of achieving “up to 300 strokes per minute.” When O’Malley attempts to engage this saleswoman in a political discussion, she reveals only that she is “not a fan” of Obama. Another convention-goer fully supports the plan to build a wall on the Mexican border. O’Malley seems thrilled with all of this and is particularly jazzed to see the actual KITT from Knight Rider. What KITT is doing at a sex expo is anyone’s guess.
