A moment of critical immaturity
Yes, yes, I know this is immature (my friends call this "Because I am 12" moments), but when I saw the Criterion edition of Douglas Sirk's Magnificent Obsession on Scott's desk, I broke out laughing at the cover art. (It's a polished, rococo-ed up version of the original poster, in case you were wondering.) What exactly is Rock Hudson magnificently obsessed with in this film, I wonder? It seems pretty clear, judging from where his head is, and the weirdly intense pleasure/pain expression on his face.
(For a more nuanced, less Nelson Muntz-esque view of Magnificent Obsession, tune in next week, when Noel will be reviewing it for us. Last I heard, Noel was not 12 years old.)
