A murder is only one of Big Little Lies’ many mysteries

Here’s what’s up in the world of TV for Sunday, March 19. All times are Eastern.

Top pick

Big Little Lies (HBO, 9 p.m.): Big Little Lies has been trotting along at a pretty tight clip, as the idyllic community of Monterey is apparently a hotbed of controversy and seething resentment. The mysterious murder that frames the series is only one of many questions we have: Who is the bully in Ziggy and Amabelle’s first-grade class? Could Madeline and Renata ever become friends? Will Celeste reveal to her therapist what’s really going on in her marriage? And how could we possibly ever move to an area as picturesque as Monterey? We probably would never be able to afford it, but we’re enjoying the glass-house real-estate porn nonetheless.

Wild card

Columbo, “Columbo Goes To College” (MeTV, 8 p.m.): NBC’s Mystery Movie used to run on Sunday night, and MeTV picks up this fine tradition by running Columbo reruns to kick off the week. Tonight’s is an excellent entry from the controversial later Columbo era after he jumped to ABC: “Columbo Goes To College” involves our favorite rumpled detective taking down a pair of snooty preppies in a thoroughly satisfying fashion.
