A new Spider-Man game is coming exclusively to PlayStation 4
It looks like that relationship between Sony and Marvel is really paying off. First there was Spider-Man making it into Captain America: Civil War and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and now the PlayStation 4 is getting an exclusive new Spider-Man game. Announced last night at Sony’s PlayStation conference, the project, which is just titled Spider-Man for now, is in development at Insomniac Games, a longtime Sony partner that’s best known for creating the Ratchet & Clank series. If we had to guess what landed them the gig, though, it would be 2014’s Sunset Overdrive, a game about a mouthy, superhumanly acrobatic hero swooping around a vast metropolis.
According to the game’s director, Insomniac’s Spider-Man isn’t based on any existing movie or other Spidey incarnation. It’s an original story starring “a more seasoned Peter Parker who’s more masterful at fighting big crime in New York City” and is “struggling to balance his absurdly chaotic personal life and career.” Of all the superheroes who’ve gone from page to pixels, Spider-Man has one of the better video game track records, with 2004’s Spider-Man 2 setting a stellar foundation for the web slinger’s open-world adventures that looks like it has resonated all the way into Insomniac’s new take. No other details or a release date were announced, but at least we got a minute of Spidey performing some sweet super parkour.
