A street in Queens has been named after the Ramones
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Ramones’ self-titled debut album, and the city of New York has come up with a good way to honor one of the many iconic rock bands that was birthed within its cozy boroughs. As reported by Brooklyn Vegan, the intersection at 67th Avenue and 110th Street in Queens will be rechristened Ramones Way on October 23. Those streets happen to be in front of Forest Hills High School, which was attended by all four original members of the band—John Cummings, Thomas Erdelyi, Douglas Colvin, and Jeffrey Hyman. The high school itself will be keeping its name for now, but we assume it will also decide to honor the Ramones when the 40th anniversary of “Rock ‘N’ Roll High School” comes along in 2019.
As an interesting side note, the Brooklyn Vegan story mentions that Forest Hills High School is also the alma mater of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel. Seeing as how the street out front isn’t named after them, it’s pretty clear which famous alumni the city prefers. Maybe the school could change its mascot to the Fightin’ Simon And Garfunkels as a condolence honor? That’d be cool.
