A young Barack and Michelle Obama explore Chicago in the Southside With You trailer

On a warm summer day in 1989, a young lawyer named Michelle Robinson agreed to accompany a law firm associate named Barack Obama on an extended date. While strolling through Chicago—discussing their views of the world, attending a community organizing event, taking in some art, catching a showing of Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing—the two found they have a connection. After nightfall, they shared both an ice cream cone and a first kiss. That’s the gist of Southside With You, writer-director Richard Tanne’s modest but ambitious ode to blossoming love and youthful exuberance.

Tika Sumpter (Ride Along 2) and Parker Sawyers (Zero Dark Thirty) seem pretty well-cast as two highly intelligent and motivated people with eyes on changing the world. Obviously, we have no way of knowing what paths these two characters will take after their date, and with it this movie, comes to an end. But given what we see in the charming trailer, it sure feels like they might go on to accomplish something special. Since this film is apparently based on a real-life event, there’s probably some way we could find out. Has anybody tried Googling their names?

Southside With You will arrive in theaters this August.
