Audiences should gird their eternal souls, because a new, adult-aimed stop-motion film called Hell And Back is on the way. In the film, Augie and Remy (voiced by T.J. Miller and Nick Swardson, respectively) have to journey to the underworld after their friend Curt (Rob Riggle) is sucked into the abyss. There they must deal with demons, damned souls, various angels, and a woman (or possibly a demon or vampire? Either way, she’s voiced by Mila Kunis) on the trail of Orpheus (Danny McBride). Will they be able to rescue their friend from the clutches of the devil (Bob Odenkirk)? And just how many dick and fart jokes will there be in this film?
The trailer shows off impressive stop-motion animation from Shadow Machine, the company behind Triptank and Robot Chicken. And there’s a virtual murderer’s row of comic talent lending their voices to this thing, including roles for Brian Posehn, Kumail Nanjiani, Susan Sarandon, Kyle Kinane, and Maria Bamford amongst many others. Is this a return to adult-oriented animated fare that could usher in other projects if it is successful (like the long-gestating Goon animated film)? Only time will tell.
