ABC is making a Car Wash show

Michael Schultz’s cult classic Car Wash is boogieing its way to TV; according to The Hollywood Reporter, ABC has started development on a series adaptation of the 1976 comedy. The series will presumably follow in the movie’s episodic footsteps, which tracked a single day in the life of the employees and customers of a Los Angeles car wash.

Producer Will Packer (Straight Outta Compton) will take the lead on the series, which is being described as a single-camera comedy. Packer has tapped Living Single’s Rob Horn and Everybody Hates Chris’ Matt Claybrooks to pen a script, while Kenny Leon—the man behind NBC’s successful The Wiz Live! and the upcoming Hairspray Live!—will direct the pilot.

The original Car Wash was notable for a number of things, including its multi-racial cast, Grammy-winning soundtrack, and cameos from ’70s stars like Richard Pryor, George Carlin, and the Pointer Sisters. You can see a trailer for the movie below:
