ABC orders Couch Detective, which is at least one of the things you think it is
Described as being “in the tradition of great mystery dramas about amateur sleuths” who didn’t wind up getting killed or arrested for interfering with a police investigation, like Murder She Wrote, ABC has picked up a new thriller from producer Jerry Bruckheimer called Couch Detective. Neither a couch who solves crimes, nor someone who finds the things you lost in your couch, Couch Detective concerns a thirtysomething female who delves into mysteries using her “encyclopedic knowledge of every true-crime TV special, police procedural, and made-for-TV movie.”
While someone would normally apply these skills toward bothering you in the break room—until you finally say, “Sorry, I don’t watch Bones”—the Couch Detective actually gets involved in real-life thrillers, albeit comedic ones dreamed up by Awkward creator Lauren Iungerich. “I like the couch, but what if it had wheels and doors and could also drive really fast?”—Jerry Bruckheimer’s first script note.
