ABC orders rapping-mayor pilot from Daveed Diggs and Jimmy Fallon writer

Now that reality TV star Donald Trump’s Oval Office aspirations seem all but assured, it’s time to start speculating on what other kinds of entertainers might soon be making the move into public office soon. ABC is getting the speculation ball rolling with a potential new series about a rapper-turned-mayor, Deadline reports. The as-yet-untitled single-camera comedy has been granted pilot production commitment assuming producers can assemble a suitable cast. That shouldn’t be too hard, considering that one of the showrunners is a guy who probably knows a few talented young musician/actors.

Daveed Diggs—who originated the roles of Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson in Hamilton: The Musical—will be serving as executive producer alongside former Late Night With Jimmy Fallon writer Jeremy Bronson, who wrote the script. The story will follow a struggling hip-hop artist who concocts a plan to run for mayor as a marketing stunt for his mixtape, but ends up winning the election. Despite recent TV appearances in episodes of Black-ish and The Get Down, Diggs is not attached to star.
