ABC picks up new shows from Zach Braff, Shonda Rhimes, and more
ABC just thinned its herd a little bit by canceling American Crime, Imaginary Mary, and a few other shows you probably didn’t watch, so to go along with returning shows like Designated Survivor, Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D., and Once Upon A Time, it has given series orders to a new batch of pilots. This comes from The Hollywood Reporter, which says there are six new shows in total, and they include stuff from Zach Braff, Shonda Rhimes, the Agent Carter team, and Hamilton‘s Daveed Diggs.
First is Diggs’ The Mayor, which stars Brandon Micheal Hall as a rapper who runs for a political office as a stunt and then actually gets elected. Lea Michele, Yvette Nicole Brown, and David Spade are also in it, and the show is apparently a “musical comedy.” There’s also For The People, which comes from Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers, with THR saying it’s a legal drama about new lawyers working on opposite sides of the courtroom at New York’s high-pressure federal court.
Next is The Gospel Of Kevin, which was created by Agent Carter showrunners Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters. It stars Jason Ritter as a down-on-his-luck man who somehow realizes that God wants him to save the world. Then there’s The Crossing, which stars Steve Zahn and is about refugees from the future traveling back to 2017 America in hopes of escaping the war that has ravaged their future country.
Then there’s The Good Doctor, which centers around Bates Motel‘s Freddie Highmore as a young surgeon with Savant syndrome who takes a job in a prestigious hospital’s pediatric unit. Finally, ABC has also picked up an untitled project directed by and starring Zach Braff that’s about a father who quits his job as a “brilliant radio journalist” to try and start his own company. It’s all based on the podcast Start Up, and though it was originally titled Start Up, the name is apparently being changed.
