ABC renewed most of its shows (including Galavant!), canceled others (like Cristela)

With a few days remaining until ABC promotes its new fall offerings at its upfront presentation, everyone at the network is super busy, so entertainment chief Paul Lee just went ahead and set out a big bowl of renewals and let ABC’s programming slate help itself. That means additional seasons for 16 ABC shows, including most of its freshman series and nearly all of the returning shows still technically “on the bubble” pending a renewal announcement.

Good news first: Most ABC shows have been renewed, including newcomers Black-ish, Fresh Off The Boat, American Crime, Secrets And Lies, How To Get Away With Murder, Marvel’s Agent Carter, and of all things, Galavant. Both American Crime and Secrets And Lies will proceed as anthology series, though the network has yet to officially announce how many, if any, of the season one cast members will continue with their respective shows.

Other returning shows include Castle, Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D., Once Upon A Time, Nashville, The Middle, The Goldbergs, Modern Family, Scandal, and Grey’s Anatomy, which will head into its 12th season this fall.

And now for the bad news. In a classic case of passive-aggressive corporate violence, ABC didn’t email everybody to tell them there was a bowl of renewals out, so you only got one if you happened to pass by Paul Lee’s desk. As a result, the fantasy cop drama Forever and the promising multi-camera sitcom Cristela won’t get second seasons. The sophomore drama Resurrection, which returned from the dead thanks to an unexpected renewal, is now actually dead, along with The Taste, the little-watched culinary reality competition that was granted a reprieve after its first season. Revenge, which Lee was surprisingly bullish about in a January press conference, was canceled last week.
