ABC renews its love affair with Shonda Rhimes’ TGIT lineup

Lovers of red wine, popcorn, and nonsensical plots rejoice: ABC has renewed your TGIT lineup of Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, and How To Get Away With Murder. Variety reports today that Shonda Rhimes’ Thursday night shows will continue into the next year, even though Grey’s is on its 13th season, HTGAWM just offed a main character, and Scandal took a B613 turn a while back and landed in the Crazytown section of Shondaland. It’s not clear whether this particular juggernaut of these three Rhimes-produced shows will stay together next year, as Rhimes is also working on the fun caper romance The Catch (which returns in March), an unnamed Romeo and Juliet drama, and a new legal drama by Shondaland writer Paul Davies.

Rhimes’ fans are apparently fiercely loyal, as her current lineup dominates Thursday night ratings in the key 18-49 demographic. Variety says that last night, TGIT ruled the ratings board with season 13 Grey’s bringing 8.43 million viewers, season six Scandal with 6.24 million viewers, and season three HTGAWM with 4.92 million. ABC president Channing Dungey enthused: “Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, and How to Get Away With Murder continue to keep viewers on the edge of their seats and wanting more. I’m thrilled to bring back these shows and the OMG moments that come with them.” Speaking of those OMG moments, may we suggest more confounding Grey’s medical oddities and less murderous Scandal characters beating people to death with chairs. And more Viola Davis in everything.
