Actually, Zendaya might be Mary Jane Watson in Spider-Man: Homecoming

Despite claims to the contrary from back in March, Disney Channel veteran Zendaya apparently really is playing Mary Jane Watson in Spider-Man: Homecoming. That’s according to The Wrap, which claims to have gotten the information from “two individuals with knowledge of the project” who say that a recent draft of the Homecoming script involves Zendaya’s character—initially referred to as “Michelle”—offering “several clues to her identity as Mary Jane.” If this report is true, and if Homecoming is going to follow the traditional canon at all, then it means that Zendaya will be playing one of the most important supporting characters in Spider-Man’s history. That makes this a pretty big deal, since it could give us an idea of the direction that Sony and Marvel want to take director Jon Watt’s Tom Holland-starring Spider-Man reboot in.

Of course, none of this has been confirmed, so it’s still very possible that Zendaya won’t really be playing Mary Jane. In fact, for all we know she’ll be playing Gwen Stacy, Dr. Octopus, or just some random girl named Michelle. Just to be safe, though, we’re going to stop believing movie studios when they tell us that people aren’t playing May Jane Watson, even in movies that have nothing to do with Spider-Man. For example: Jared Leto is going to be in the Blade Runner sequel? He’s probably playing Mary Jane Watson.
