Adam McKay once again has enough leftover Anchorman 2 material to make a whole new movie

Like a layer of comedy butterscotch folded into yet more comedy butterscotch, the upcoming Anchorman: The Legend Continues is reportedly loaded with so many variations on the same jokes, Adam McKay believes they could make for an entirely new and separate film. And while he’s done something like that once before, cobbling together the DVD extra Wake Up, Ron Burgundy from all the leftover footage from the first film, this time he envisions it as a full-on alternate version of the sequel—one that, if he gets his way, could even find its way to theaters.

“We did so much improv on this one that we can literally replace every single joke in the movie and put in alt scenes and alt improv runs,” McKay tells Empire. “I think the editor’s working on it right now, with 250 new jokes. I think it would be really funny to put it in theatres for midnight showings. I know that I personally, if I loved a movie and someone told me that, like if Airplane! had been released with all-new jokes, I’d be like, ‘You’ve got to be fucking kidding me!’ I’d see it in a second.” (Confidential to Adam McKay: They kind of did release Airplane! with new jokes. It was called Airplane II.)

In addition to all those alternate jokes, McKay says that, as with the original Anchorman, entire scenes and subplots had to be cut to whittle it down to its one hour, 53 minute running time—including the “Are you a vampire?” scene that’s such a central part of the new trailer. McKay also promises (threatens?) a “25-minute” version of the sequence where the guys discuss all of Fantana’s funny condom names, which, frankly, sounds as good as most of the new sitcoms that have been pitched lately. Maybe also do that.
