Adam McKay says Anchorman 3 might exist in the world of new media

The Anchorman saga may be only two-thirds complete, according to the films’ director/co-writer Adam McKay. While talking to Yahoo! Movies just ahead of the release of his first non-comedy, The Big Short, McKay was asked about what Ron Burgundy’s next career move might be. If the first Anchorman was a parody of local news and its sequel took aim at cable news, then—as interviewer Jordan Zakarin wondered—might the third film be about the digital box of emotion otherwise known as the internet?

“That was what we kind of talked about. We talked about doing one that was about the rise of the new media,” McKay revealed of discussions presumably with his Anchorman writing partner Will Ferrell. “I also thought there was something to the idea—and who knows, maybe we will do one some day—I also thought it’d be cool to have Ron Burgundy get embedded in the Iraq War. We kicked around that idea. But we’ve never got that serious about it, but it would have to be the next stage of what the media has become. And I think you’re right, I think it’s the internet.”

Fans shouldn’t hold their breath waiting for Anchorman 3 to hit theaters, though. As McKay points out, Ferrell is currently too young to play an internet-age Ron Burgundy. “So maybe it’s a movie we make in ten years, when Will’s aged up and it actually makes sense that you can set it in 1997 or ’98.”
