It’s been 14 years since 9/11, and yet some celebrities haven’t learned that the American public still takes the whole thing pretty seriously. Take, for example, earth-conscious, left-leaning Adrian Grenier, who’s in low-grade hot water with a bunch of online Entourage fans for posting an image of the Twin Towers last Friday alongside a caption criticizing the subsequent Iraq War. Grenier has since taken the post down, but it read “R.I.P the 2,996 Americans who died in 9/11. R.I.P the 1,455,590 innocent Iraqis who died during the U.S. invasion for something they didn’t do.”
As Us Weekly points out, a good portion of Grenier’s 539,000 Instagram followers took issue with his post, with one individual calling Grenier a “piece of shit,” and telling him to “get out of this amazing country if you’re gonna hate on what the military does… Scumbag.” Another commenter eloquently laid into Grenier, saying, “as smart as you think you are… you are stupid as hell.”
After he was roundly criticized for raising a semi-valid point, Grenier used his Instagram account to post bland pro-U.S.A., “remembering 9/11” images, including one of two couples kissing in front of the Twin Towers. He hasn’t commented on the controversy since.
Devo’s Jerry Casale, on the other hand, appeared to be courting controversy with his 9/11 themed wedding this past Friday. The singer and bassist’s reception not only featured a Twin Towers cake emblazoned with the bride and groom’s faces, but also box-cutter favors for all their guests. Even the table setting cards had box cutters on them, though attendees at the wedding didn’t seem as offended as the people at TMZ, with one guest telling the site that Casale not only has a strange and dark sense of humor, but that he has “a real heart as an artist, and is a super sweet guy.”
In other news, a bunch of cheerleaders in Texas recently did a solemn-but-peppy 9/11 themed routine set to Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless The USA,” as well as audio of 911 calls and George Bush speaking.
