School’s out for Daniel Radcliffe, but a war is still on. Coming Soon (via Variety’s Boffo blog) reports Radcliffe will follow up parts one and two of Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows with a new adaption of All Quiet On The Western Front. The 1929 novel by German author Erich Maria Remarque tells the story of a young German soldier’s grim experiences with trench warfare during World War I and the dislocation he feels upon returning home to his family. It was previously adapted into Best Picture-winning 1930 film by Lewis Milestone (and, less memorably, as a 1979 TV movie starring Richard Thomas and Ernest Borgnine.) Radcliffe seems partial to bildungsromans and war movies, having appeared in the BBC television films David Copperfield and My Boy Jack, where he played Rudyard Kipling’s 17-year old son who went missing during World War I. This new project in Radcliffe’s schedule will most likely follow his previously announced return to Broadway in a 2011 revival of the musical How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying.
