Agent Carter might be done as Hayley Atwell takes starring role on ABC’s Conviction

One of the best members of the Marvel Cinematic Universe might be leaving the world of comic book movies/TV shows soon, as Deadline is reporting that Hayley Atwell is now set to star in Conviction, ABC’s new legal drama about people who are wrongly convicted. Atwell currently stars on Agent Carter, and in Conviction she’ll be playing “the brilliant but ne’er-do-well daughter of a former President” who also happens to be named Carter. (Deadline expects this character’s name to change.) Conviction’s Carter gets “blackmailed into taking a job as the head of Los Angeles’ newly created Conviction Integrity Unit,” which is the procedural-drama name for a group of lawyers who try to help wrongfully convicted people.

Deadline says that there’s a chance Atwell will be able to do both Conviction and Agent Carter, but since they’re both on ABC and both come from the same studio, it probably means that the Marvel show won’t live to see a third season. Hopefully she’ll at least wear some stylish hats and beat up personifications of ’50s-style sexism on Conviction, so the loss won’t feel too bad.
