Alfonso Cuarón’s returning to Mexico to shoot his next film

Alfonso Cuarón’s 2001 film, Y Tu Mamá También, is as much a coming-of-age story as it is a road movie because the director paired Mexico’s diverse geographical landscapes with its shifting political one. (There was also lots of sex and drugs, which are other Bildungsroman elements.) Despite how well he worked with the rough terrains and oases, Cuarón hasn’t shot a film in Mexico in 15 years. That’s about to change, though, as Deadline reports that Cuarón’s next project will be filmed in his homeland.

The as-yet-untitled project will be written and directed by Cuarón, who’s been nominated for a best original screenplay Oscar (for the aforementioned Y Tu Mamá Tambien), and became the first Mexico-born director to win the best directing Oscar in 2014 for Gravity. The discreet charm of the Mexican bourgeoisie will reportedly be the focus of the film, which will “chronicle a year in the life of a middle-class family in Mexico City in the early 1970s.” Given Cuarón’s propensity for delving into politics in his work, it’s possible that the movie will touch on the Dirty War, which the Mexican government waged against leftist activists and dissidents from the 1960s-1980s. Filming is scheduled to begin this fall.
