All hail the GIF: The 2013 Webby Awards winners have been announced
With the exception of your 16-year-old cousin’s Tumblr, there’s arguably only one arena where Jerry Seinfeld and Frank Ocean could receive honors alongside Angry Birds Star Wars and the Hunger Games: Capitol Tour website. That’s right: the International Academy Of Digital Arts And Sciences has announced the recipients for the 17th annual Webby Awards honoring excellence on the Internet.
In addition to Ocean (named Person Of The Year) and Seinfeld (who won for Outstanding Comic Performance), this year’s Special Achievement Award winners include House Of Cards’ Kevin Spacey and Dana Brunetti—for proving that a surprising number of people are willing to watch their computer screens for 13 hours straight—and Steve Wilhite, who received a Lifetime Achievement Award for creating the GIF. Minnesota Viking Chris Kluwe received the first ever Athlete Of The Year Award for his marriage equality and LGBT rights activism online.
In the website and campaign categories, big winners included TED, The New Yorker, Pinterest, and Nike, with HBO Go also receiving several nods for allowing people to bypass the hassle of an HBO subscription by badgering their friends and family members for login info. The A.V. Club’s sister publication, The Onion, unsurprisingly received the Best Humor Site award. For a full, extensive list of this year’s winners, check out the Webby Awards’ official site. Like last year, King Of The Nerds Patton Oswalt will host the awards ceremony, which will stream live on May 21.
