Alvin And The Chipmunks 4 challenges The Force Awakens to a box-office duel

Unlike Kung-Fu Panda 3’s Po and Inferno’s renowned symbology professor Robert Langdon, Alvin and The Chipmunks are badass as hell. Not only have they sustained a career in the cutthroat world of novelty pop music since the ’50s, but apparently they’re also not afraid of anything, not even Captain Phasma and her amazing chrome Stormtrooper armor. We know this because the fourth movie in the Alvin And The Chipmunks series—subtitled The Road Chip, obviously—will open in theaters on December 18, 2015, the same day as Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Alvin And The Chipmunks’ release date was originally going to be December 23, but it was recently bumped up to December 18. That means those little rodents are purposefully going up against Star Wars, which means they must know they have an unexpectedly powerful film on their tiny little hands. Is The Road Chip actually going to be better than Star Wars? Will it resonate throughout our culture for decades, the way Star Wars has? We can only assume that the answer to both of these questions is “yes.”
