Alyson Hannigan agrees to return to the American Pie machine

As a quick glance at the Wal-Mart $5 DVD rack will tell you, the American Pie franchise long ago turned sentient and began replicating its own sequels autonomously. (Well, mostly autonomously: Eugene Levy has often awoken to find he’s unable to account for the last several days.) Still, the series’ devotees, a community we’ll just assume calls itself Piehards, will say that only the first three count as “canon,” arguing this point well into the night on their American Pie newsgroups, we imagine. So for these fans, the upcoming American Reunion is the only true sequel the film has had in eight years, a claim to legitimacy that’s just been bolstered by original star Alyson Hannigan signing on to reprise her role as the girl who ruined the flute for an entire generation of marching band members. Hannigan’s participation was apparently crucial to the film getting made, as the storyline will revolve around her marriage and child with Jason Biggs’ character, all of which is set against the backdrop of a high-school reunion attended by most of the old cast. (Hey, a sequel Tara Reid can actually appear in.) Hopefully it will also find a way to work in all of those successive generations of straight-to-DVD Stiflers, thereby finally bringing some peace to the oft-divided American Pie fan community.
