Amanda Seyfried says she was paid 10 percent of male co-star’s salary
The pay gap in Hollywood is real, and Amanda Seyfried is the latest actress to speak out about it. Seyfried recently told the Sunday Times that she recently made far less money than an equally famous male co-star on one of her movies.
“A few years ago, on one of my big-budget films, I found I was being paid 10 percent of what my male co-star was getting,” Seyfried said. “And we were pretty even in status.”
Seyfried did not name the project or the star in question, but based on the “few years” range she gives and her filmography lately, one could speculate the title might be in French and the male co-star in question could be a certain recent Oscar winner. Look, we’re not pointing any fingers or tricolor flags or anything. Just feel free to speculate on your own.
“I think people think that just because I’m easy-going and game to do things I’ll just take as little as they offer,” she added. “It’s not about how much you get; it’s about how fair it is.”
After the Sony leaks revealed significant pay gaps for both Charlize Theron and Jennifer Lawrence when compared to their male co-stars, both women pulled a “BBHMM.” Okay, so they didn’t pull any murder heists, but they did ask to be paid what they were owed, and rightfully so. Seyfried thinks women should be willing to walk away from projects that don’t offer equal pay, but it shouldn’t only be left to the women to take action.
