Amanda Seyfried signs on for the Mamma Mia! sequel

Last month, we reported that Swedish heartbreak pop would once again be the order of the day in American theaters, with Universal announcing it was working on a Mamma Mia! sequel, aptly subtitled Here We Go Again. Directed by Best Exotic Marigold Hotel screenwriter Ol Parker, Deadline reports that the film has started signing contracts with the previous movie’s stars, with Amanda Seyfried officially joining the cast today.

Seyfriend played Sophie in the 2008 film adaptation of the popular jukebox musical, the daughter of Meryl Streep’s romantically fickle heroine Donna. Streep is expected to also sign on to reprise her role for the sequel, although neither she, nor co-stars Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, or Christine Baranski have officially made any announcements. Universal will have to get a move on, though, because the sequel’s July 2018 release date is just a little more than a year away, and those depressingly upbeat pop numbers aren’t going to sing themselves.
