Amazon to release Nicolas Winding Refn’s The Neon Demon in theaters

Seeing Netflix’s edgy, Emmy-winning auteur and raising it an edgy, Palme d’Or-winning auteur, Variety reports that Amazon Studios has picked up distribution rights to Drive and Only God Forgives director Nicolas Winding Refn’s new movie, The Neon Demon. In a strategy similar to that used for Netflix’s Beasts Of No Nation and Amazon’s own Chi-Raq, the film will be released theatrically in the U.S. next summer, followed by its debut on Amazon Prime.

Described as a “female-led” horror movie set in the (potentially literally) cutthroat world of modeling, The Neon Demon stars Elle Fanning, Jena Malone, Christina Hendricks, and, prettiest of them all, Keanu Reeves. According to Variety, the story centers around an aspiring model who moves to L.A. to pursue her dream, only to have her youth and beauty “devoured by a group of beauty-obsessed women who will go to any lengths to get what she has.” So Refn’s a big Death Becomes Her fan, then?
