As Amazon prepares to launch full seasons of its first two original TV shows, there are many more on the way, all as part of the company's overarching plan to make all non-Amazon forms of print, audio, and video obsolete. The latest weapon in its arsenal is Gael García Bernal (Y Tu Mamá También, The Motorcycle Diaries), who's joining the Roman Coppola-written Mozart In the Jungle.
Mozart is based on the memoir by New York Philharmonic oboist Blair Tindall—subtitled Sex, Drugs And Classical Music—in which she explores the seamy underbelly you might not expect to find lurking beneath symphony culture. The TV adaptation is being co-written by Coppola (who previously co-wrote Moonrise Kingdom and The Darjeeling Limited with Wes Anderson), his cousin Jason Schwartzman (who starred in those two Wes Anderson movies, plus several more besides), and Broadway vet Alex Timbers (who will presumably handle the musical heavy lifting involved with an orchestra-based show). Bernal will play a preening conductor named Gustavo, who cares equally about his art and his image.
Bernal can also soon be seen in Jon Stewart's Rosewater, as well as in Gravity writer Jonás Cuarón's next film, Desierto. Coppola and Schwartzman will continue to make Wes Anderson movies with Wes Anderson.
