AMC orders pilot for Preacher adaptation
A TV adaptation of Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s Preacher comic book series is one step closer to fleeing the confines of pre-production limbo and roaming unchecked across AMC. Variety reports that the network has ordered a pilot for the project, adapted by executive producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.
Since Ennis first pitched the comic as a potential film, the project has undergone fits and starts, with unsuccessful attempts to adapt it for theaters and television. Kevin Smith, Sam Mendes, Joe Carnahan, and D.J. Caruso are among those who tried—and failed—to bring Preacher to life.
AMC has been the latest network to forge ahead, and it appears to be making progress. Rogen and Goldberg first announced their involvement in November 2013, with AMC subsequently confirming their participation. The network has now commissioned a pilot to be produced next summer, for possible consideration for a series pickup in 2016.
Preacher tells the story of Jesse Custer, a foul-mouthed, disillusioned preacher who is possessed by a powerful supernatural being. Accompanied by his ex-girlfriend Tulip and vampire-buddy Cassidy, Custer seeks to confront God, who seemingly abandoned his heavenly post.
