AMC to go back Into The Badlands for a second season

Cementing its reputation as the network where everybody except Rubicon and Low Winter Sun gets a second season, AMC has announced that it’s renewing its martial arts fantasy drama Into The Badlands. The Daniel Wu-starring adventure series will have an expanded order when it returns for its second season, presumably in the fall; the network has bumped it up from a six-episode trial run to a full 10 episodes of magical pendants, opium barons, and people cinematically smashing each other in the face.

Despite earning critical shrugs for its mixture of lush visuals and sometimes bare-bones characters, Badlands made a strong showing for itself, ratings-wise, grabbing the title of “third-highest-rated first season of a cable series of all time.” Of course, AMC could probably stick Gilligan’s Island reruns into the show’s post-Walking Dead time slot and still pull in millions of viewers, but it’s still good news for all the samurai steampunk romance fans that make up the show’s very specific audience.
