A new chapter in Ryan Murphy’s ongoing assault on your senses (or “anthology series”) will be told next year, as Variety reports that FX has renewed American Horror Story for a sixth season. The hit series has become the most-watched show in FX’s history, so it was probably never in danger of being canceled. Still, the early renewal is good news for fans of the show, which is currently in its Lady Gaga phase.
But although the show will be around for at least another year or two, FX CEO and Peak TV prognosticator John Landgraf has already sent it on its way to exulted-series land, telling Variety that “American Horror Story has unquestionably joined the ranks of television’s landmark series.” Landgraf continued (with his trademark humility):
From Murder House to Hotel, AHS has pioneered a new television form as well becoming FX’s highest rated show—while also pushing every conceivable boundary of creative excellence and audacity. This is even more remarkable because Ryan and co-creator Brad Falchuk tear up the playbook every year, challenging the entire creative team to come up with something even more spectacular, frightful and entertaining. You could not ask more of an artist, their team or a series and with every new installment they deliver.
Season six of American Horror Story currently has no theme or title, but it’s a safe bet that a lot of the stellar cast from the previous iterations will return. Here’s hoping that American Horror Story: Condo is in the works, with Denis O’Hare set to play the demented head of the homeowners association, who maybe has strong feelings about closet organization.
