This morning, the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences announced the creators and films whose excellence may soon be rewarded with a golden statuette of a naked man holding a sword. American Hustle and Gravity led the field with 10 nominations each, followed closely by 12 Years A Slave with nine nods.
Nine films were nominated for Best Picture, an award that can see a maximum of 10 nominees. The Wolf Of Wall Street was among the Best Picture candidates and did a bit better than expected this morning with five nominations, including nods for best actor (Leonardo DiCaprio) and best supporting actor (Jonah Hill). Tom Hanks and Oprah Winfrey were among the “snubs” in the acting categories, as Christian Bale’s performance in American Hustle took the slot that Oscar watchers had decreed to be Hanks’ rightful honor, and Meryl Streep once again proved to be catnip for Academy voters.
Hundreds of films tied for last place with zero nominations.
