Joining a growing number of 1980s films that have had their wishes granted to be reborn as awkward, gangly TV shows, a remake of 1988’s Big is currently in the works. Deadline reports that Enlisted producers Kevin Biegel and Mike Royce are developing the update of Big for Fox—possibly as a pitch made out of spite for the cancellation of their wholly original cult comedy, which the network actually approved.
As with Problem Child and Real Genius and so many more before it, the television Big will only be “loosely based” on Penny Marshall’s film, in which Tom Hanks plays a stunted man-child who become a successful toy executive before Elizabeth Perkins statutory rapes him. It’s unclear which, if any, of those elements will make it into the show, as the description only says it will “explore what it means to be an adult, what it means to be a kid, and how in today’s world those two things are more confused than ever”—a notion that is particularly true when it comes to developing movies and TV shows.
