As previously reported, 27-year-old British actor Andrew Garfield has been cast as the new Peter Parker in Marc Webb's reboot of the Spider-Man franchise. Garfield gave his first interview since landing the dream role, and he spoke about the great responsibility that comes with this great power to The Hollywood Reporter:
Like every young boy who feels stronger on the inside than they look on the outside, any skinny boy basically who wishes their muscles matched their sense of injustice, God, it's just the stuff that dreams are made of, for sure. It's a true fucking honor to be part of this symbol that I actually think is a very important symbol, and it's meant a great deal to me, and it continues to mean something to people. So yeah, I feel like I've been preparing for it for a while. Ever since Halloween when I was four years old and I wore my first Spider-Man costume.
He also had this to say of Jesse Eisenberg, his costar in David Fincher's upcoming dramatization of the founding of Facebook, The Social Network: "[Eisenberg] is so smart and so funny and so cerebral and neurotic and vulnerable. But mostly geniusly funny, and he can turn any situation into something Seinfeldian." Garfield then admits, "I am very awkward."
In other words: It appears Webb has totally succeeded in finding a bona-fide, honest-to-God geek to play the über-geeky Peter Parker. It's so crazy, it just might work.
