Angela Bassett to direct Whitney Houston biopic for Lifetime

Because Whitney Houston’s life was one kidnapped stepdaughter short of a Lifetime movie to begin with, few will be surprised to learn that her story is being turned into a Lifetime Original Movie, to be played every Saturday afternoon between repeats of She’s Too Young and Terror In The Family. Angela Bassett has been tapped to direct—notable, since Bassett and Houston co-starred in the 1995 “sisters are doing it for themselves” classic Waiting To Exhale, which presumably gave Bassett some insight into the “real Whitney” at the peak of her fame.

In a statement, Bassett said, “I have such regard for both Whitney’s and Bobby [Brown]’s amazing talents and accomplishments…their humanity and bond fascinates us all.” Bassett says she won’t star in the film, but she may play a supporting role—thus prompting mass exhalation amongst thirtysomething African-American actresses with overdue car insurance payments.
