Aside from a select few who have seen early cuts, the new Ghostbusters movie thus far exists primarily as a talking point for people who like to get angry about things online. We’ve covered their collective outrage before, but it seems that not even the endorsement of the man who literally created the universe about which they feel such a sense of entitlement can make a dent in their opinions about the film. Hitfix reports Dan Aykroyd saw a cut of the new film—a film he’s been on record as supporting from the beginning, despite its pronounced lack of Dan Aykroyd starring roles—and took to social media to sing its praises. As originator of the original: Saw test screening of new movie. Apart from brilliant, genuine performances from the cast both female and male, it has more laughs and more scares than the first 2 films plus Bill Murray is in it! As one of millions of man-fans and Ray Stantz, I’m paying to see that and bringing all my friends!
On one hand, it’s not exactly shocking that one of the executive producers of this new iteration of the franchise (who also reportedly shot a cameo scene for it) is eager to put butts in seats. But on another, more dispiriting hand—perhaps one worn and weakened by time and various hostile subReddits—it’s somehow even less shocking that a swarm of angry nerds immediately took him to task for daring to express positive feelings toward a movie they haven’t seen but definitely know is bad.
“May I respectfully say: Royalties Whore!,” offered one respondent who definitely understands proper usage of the term “respectfully.” “Sorry Dan, #notmyghostbusters,” offered another contributor, who probably simply feels these Ghostbusters aren’t his because they’re too young, and therefore unlearned in the ways of busting. Clearly, the producers made a grave error by not hiring on these experts as story consultants before fleshing out the concept for a new Ghostbusters film. Here, they’ve got some ideas…
