Anna Paquin to star in Reese Witherspoon-produced ABC drama pilot
Deadline reports that Anna Paquin, the True Blood and X-Men star still known to your grandmother as “that little girl with the geese,” has joined the cast of the ABC drama pilot Broken. The show, executive produced by Reese Witherspoon and writer Meaghan Oppenheimer (We Are Your Friends), “follows the personal and professional life of Gemma (Paquin), a ruthless divorce attorney in Dallas, which begins to unravel when her emotionally damaged, love-addicted sister (Charity Wakefield) resurfaces, triggering self-destructive tendencies and exposing long-hidden family secrets.”
Blair Underwood has already been cast as Gemma’s boss and sometime lover. (Witherspoon seems content to stay behind the camera for this project—or, rather, in a building across town having budget meetings.) Whoever plays the sister, it’s a safe bet that she will try to seduce Underwood’s character, seriously impairing Gemma’s ability to help her clients get divorced. Think of all those nice people who are just trying to take half of their ex-partner’s livelihood and then never see them again, now at the mercy of tawdry workplace drama. Why won’t networks make a show about them?
