Anton Yelchin and the Star Trek Beyond cast: Dubsmash-loving goofballs
Have you heard about this Dubsmash thing? (It’s an app that lets you film short, Vine-like videos of yourself, and then dub popular music over them for easy lip-synching.) If your answer is no, you’re probably not a cast member on Star Trek Beyond, because those kids are apparently crazy for that shit. Chris Pine, John Cho, Sofia Boutella, and Karl Urban have all posted videos of themselves and their castmates using the app, passionately mouthing the words to “I’m So Excited” or “We Are The World.” (Apparently, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana aren’t the only ones who enjoy a good Lip Sync Battle.)
Things get more somber—if still energetically dorky—when you realize that one of the biggest Dubsmash enthusiasts on the Beyond set was Anton Yelchin, who died last month in an automobile accident. Boutella, Urban, and Cho have all posted videos of the 27-year-old Yelchin musically mugging, displaying an infectious goofiness that shines through in the make-up chair, hanging out with his castmates, or just popping up in the background of an enthusiastic take on Aretha Franklin’s “Think.”
