Anton Yelchin’s parents are suing Jeep

Viktor and Irina Yelchin, the parents of Star Trek and Green Room star Anton Yelchin, have filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Fiat Chrysler, the maker of the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee that ended the actor’s life on June 19. Yelchin was killed when his vehicle rolled down a short hill while he was walking behind it, pinning him against a brick mailbox. As previously reported, the vehicle had been subject to a recall notice from Fiat Chrysler, citing a gearshift design that made it difficult for some drivers to determine when their Jeep’s parking brake was on.

According to the family’s attorneys, Yelchin was sent a recall notice for the vehicle—one that didn’t arrive until a week after the actor’s death. In the suit, the family alleges that Fiat Chrysler, and the dealership Yelchin purchased the vehicle from, “failed to timely and/or adequately remedy the defective Subject Vehicle and/or defective Subject Gear Selector.” (It also contains some unpleasantly graphic descriptions of Yelchin’s death, in case you wanted to utterly screw your day up by reading those.)

Police and Fiat Chrysler itself are reportedly both still investigating the incident. Meanwhile, back on June 23, other Cherokee owners filed a potential class action lawsuit centering on the defect.
