Arcade Fire has reached the "covering Disney songs" phase of its weird career
Kids today might not believe it, but there was a time when Arcade Fire was the go-to example of a hip indie band that mainstream music fans may not have ever heard of. Then they won a Grammy, rocketing them to some level of mainstream acknowledgement, but it’s been long enough since that happened that they’ve descended into mainstream obscurity. Now, Arcade Fire has reached a new and strange phase of its existence, having recorded a new version of “Baby Mine” for the end credits of Tim Burton’s Dumbo remake. As reported by Consequence Of Sound, this is actually a big family project for the members of Arcade Fire, with the mother of Win and Will Butler playing harp and Win Butler and Régine Chassagne’s son playing triangle. Plus, the original movie featured a sequence involving an instrument called a Sonovox that the Butler brothers’ grandfather Alvino Rey “made famous in the 1930s,” and the song features a “cameo” from him playing it.
You’ll have to wait for the full movie on March 29 to hear the full song, but you can hear a clip here.
