Arcade Fire's Win Butler on how to write a song: "Kill a dog"

Arcade Fire has, across its five albums, created some of our generation’s most heart-felt, plaintive music, tackling big themes about death and identity and ennui with massive sing-along anthems. The disco-influenced new album Everything Now takes a more meta turn, tackling media overload with sometimes flippant publicity moves, and in order to discuss the way his songwriting process has evolved over time, frontman Win Butler sat down for a candid chat with our sister publication ClickHole. While there, he discussed his various musical influences, including vasectomies, protein powder, and his own anus. There’s actually a whole lot about his body in here. Aspiring songwriters, take note—your muse may be closer than you think.
