Artist imagines all the horrifying things standing behind you right now

About a year and a half ago, illustrator Brian Coldrick began a series of single-panel comics titled Behind You, which explores the unseen horror that lives, as They Might Be Giants put it, “Where your eyes don’t go.” While he shows no sign of stopping, Halloween seems like a good time to take a look at a few excerpts. With the subdued color palette and understated captions, the comics have a dry, New Yorker vibe, albeit with the inclusion of some really fantastic ghost designs.

The series gets even better when Coldrick begins incorporating animation. It’s subtle and spooky, turning the comics into brief vignettes.

It’s worth going to the Behind You site to view the comics in sequence and to watch Coldrick’s progression as an artist, with each entry getting more confident and playful.
