The trend-setting badasses at the International Astronomical Union's Committee on Small Body Nomenclature have yet again married the sci-fi and real-life-science worlds, naming an asteroid after former Star Trek actor George Takei. As legally required of all kitsched-up celebrities, Takei responded with a meteor shower's worth of silly double-entendres: "I am now a heavenly body… I found out about it yesterday. … I was blown away. It came out of the clear, blue sky – just like an asteroid." (Associated Press)
