As NASA astronauts, Nicole Stott and Leland Melvin are among the few privileged humans to experience space. Stott, known affectionately as the “Artistic Astronaut,” as she painted the first watercolor from space, has logged 104 days in orbit, while Melvin, the only person drafted into the NFL to have flown to space, has spent 24 days there. Both Stott and Melvin are lending their unique perspectives to One Strange Rock, a National Geographic nature documentary co-executive produced by Darren Aronofsky and Jane Root through Root’s production company, Nutopia. The pair spoke with us at SXSW about bringing their insights to the documentary.
