Atlanta and The Handmaid’s Tale lead the TCA awards nominations

The small screen will have its big summer night—as opposed to its winter revelry at the Golden Globes, and autumnal celebration at the Emmys—on August 5, when the 33rd Annual Television Critics Association Awards will be held in Los Angeles. These awards recognize individual and series achievements in comedy, drama, telemovies, and more. The TCA comprises over 200 TV critics and journalists from all over North America, including some of us here at The A.V. Club. This year’s ceremony will be hosted by Tony and Emmy winner—and Germanic goddess—Kristin Chenoweth.

Atlanta retains much of its 2016 luster, walking away with four nominations, including Program Of The Year. Donald Glover’s FX series ties with The Handmaid’s Tale for most nominations; while they’re nominated in the comedy and drama categories, respectively, the two series will duke it out in the Outstanding New Series group. Other TCA Awards newcomers basking in the adulation are Insecure star and co-creator Issa Rae and Fleabags Phoebe Waller-Bridge. The Good Place maintains its vaunted position among the best new comedies, while The Keeperssearch for truth has engrossed many a critic.

It’s a big year for FX overall, which garnered 11 nods for original offerings like Atlanta, The Americans, and Fargo. But HBO was the big network winner, edging out its basic-cable competitor with 12 nominations. The full list of nominees is below, and the awards will be handed out on August 5.
