Au revoir, Luc Besson?

Luc Besson, the director who proved that the French could make movies just as big and dumb (and occasionally as entertaining) as the Americans with such films as La Femme Nikita and The Fifth Element has announced plans to retire at the tender age of 47, according to an Associated Press report. Why? He'd like to take on new adventures, stating. "I want to take a little care of my fellow citizens. I want to take a little care of my planet. I want to act in favor of the inner cities, in favor of the environment. I want to do lots of things."

In the meantime, he'll be promoting his latest film, Arthur Et Les Minimoys (Arthur And The Invisibles), featuring the voices of David Bowie, Madonna, and Snoop Dogg. It hits French theaters this year and American screens in 2007.
