Aubrey Plaza and Elizabeth Olsen join “edgy” comedy about online obsession

According to Splitsider, Aubrey Plaza and Elizabeth Olsen have signed on to star in Ingrid Goes West, an “edgy” comedy about a woman who is obsessed with a social-media star. Plaza (Mike And Dave Need Wedding Dates) will portray Ingrid, a woman determined to befriend Taylor a woman played by Olsen (Captain America: Civil War) whose social-media accounts promise a picture-perfect life. Instead of realizing that for every beautiful picture on Instagram there are dozens of discarded images with bad lighting or someone’s landlord rapping on a window in the background and demanding money, Ingrid buys into the fantasy and moves West to meet her online idol in the flesh.

Hopefully this synopsis is a bit reductive and the main character isn’t this stupid, or maybe the film wears its “edgy” descriptor proudly and Ingrid is a delusional, dangerous person who won’t stop until she comes face to face with the object of her obsession. We suppose it wouldn’t be too difficult to track down social-media stars in real life, since they constantly promote their favorite spots—and sometimes it’s just a coincidence that you end up writing articles across the street from Kim Kardashian’s preferred Tuesday yoga spot.

The film will mark the directorial debut of Matt Spicer, who co-wrote the script with David Branson Smith, a producer on the underappreciated Enlightened and the 2013 web series Bad Sports. If this film is anything like Enlightened, the meeting between the social-media maven and her biggest fan will probably be as awkward as possible. But slap a Mayfair filter on that moment, and no one would guess anything’s wrong.
